Telling Time and Time Zones

Matteo Scotto 9/26/19 Time Zone - a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) - the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) - the local civil time at the former site of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, which is located on the prime meridian. Daylight Saving Time (DST) - the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months, and back again in the fall, in order to make better use of natural daylight. Standard Deviation - the average distance between each value and the mean. Geographers use this step by step process to calculate standard deviation off of time at UTC. Calculate the mean or average of each data set. To do this, add up all the numbers in a data set and divide by the total number of pieces of data. For example, if you have four numbers in a data set, divide...

The Geographic Grid

Matteo Scotto 9/25/19 Geographic Grid - A system of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern on the Earth's surface.  Latitude - a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Longitude - a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface, or the surface of a celestial body. Parallels - i maginary line extending around the Earth parallel to the equator; it is used to indicate latitude.  Meridians - imaginary north-south line on the Earth’s surface that connects both geographic poles; it is used to indicate longitude. The Major significant lines of Longitude and Latitude are the Equator and Prime Meridian. The Equator is the imaginary line that separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and is at 0 degrees latitude. The Prime Meridian is the imaginary line that separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres and is at 0 degrees longitude. 40.8518° N, 1...
Matteo Scotto 9/4/2019 Today was the first day of Human Geo. We learned about the three different types of maps, Political, Physical, and Thematical. Political maps show the borders between different countries, states, governments, etc. Physical maps show how the land looks from a bird's eye view. Thematical maps show the distribution of human or natural features. They also usually "tell a story".
